France 1913 “carte visite” type small envelope sent from Paris to Washington DC, United States and containing the personal card of Gustave EIFFEL (him of the Eiffel Tower fame, alongside many other important engineering projects across France and Europe), addressed to an equally famous scientist of the day, namely Mr. Alexander Graham BELL, inventor of the telephone. The card, sent from Paris on Christmas Eve, bears Mr. Eiffel’s handwritten note thanking Mr. Bell for a Smithsonian brochure (most probably containing technical information) and wishing him all the best for the New Year. Overall, an absolutely fascinating piece of scientific/technological history involving two of the greatest names of the late 19th / early 20th centuries (but also tinged with a philatelic dimension, as the envelope was indeed correctly franked for 25c and thus bears a Semeuse stamp).
